Grow another Golf Tree

Well, a couple of weeks ago when you started the Mental Golf Instruction course the first thing you did was build your own golf tree with a set of goals that you wanted to achieve during the golf season. This was the first part of your mental golf conditioning.

Have you started picking the low hanging fruit from your golf tree?

Well, today we are going to plant another golf tree but this one is different and is aimed at providing some simple targets for you to reach and give you confidence and a better golf swing without having to use any golf training aids.

This tree will have 18 apples for you to pick and you will pick them one at a time.
I want you to relax, grab a coffee or a beer, grab a pen and paper and we'll look at how you can conquer your home course or the course you play most of your golf on.

I want you to visualise the first hole at your course and write down the easiest way to play it.

I'll give you an example.......the first hole on my home course is a Par 5 with a tee shot over water of about 170 yards to find the fairway, this would be followed by a shot of about 180 yards to leave you a third shot of about 140 yards over water to a nice big green.

Now when you read that it sounds quite easy apart from the water.

Lets break it down:

Shot 1 170 yards (4 or 5 iron) Everyone usually takes a driver
Shot 2 180 yards (4 iron or 5 wood) A lot of people are already in the water or in rough because the shot with the driver has gone AWOL
Shot 3 140 yards (7 or 8 or 9 iron)
Shot 4 Putt
Shot 5 Putt

There you go!!! A nice Par to start the round with and I didn't need to take a driver.

This is just a mental thought, does a tee shot mean you take your driver out of the bag every time? It does not have to.

Sorry for rambling but this lesson will help lower your scores without a shadow of a doubt.

I want you to do what I have done above and write out for every hole the easiest way to reach the green in regulation by breaking the hole down into small pieces (One shot at a time)

Ok it's Art Class again!!!

Take your pen and paper and draw yourself another tree with 6 branches and place three apples (holes on each branch)

Next time you go out to the course you must follow the hole by hole breakdown like the example above for the first three holes, forget about the temptation to try a different shot than the ones you have written down.

If you achieve your target for these three holes you can come back and pick the apples from your tree, if not you must wait until the next time you go out.

If you are successful with the first three holes then the next time you go out you should then aim to hit the targets you have set for the first six holes.

You then have to repeat this for 9,12,15 and 18 holes.

As you achieve each landmark it will give you the confidence to automatically play well on the early holes.

If you can start doing this you will see your scores and your handicap tumble

the above instruction leads nicely into our next drill which is called Home On The Range

Good luck with this
